From fishing hamlet to coastal resort
Bentota's name is thought to come from "Bentara," a river settlement noted in colonial-era records. Like much of Sri Lanka's coast, it passed through Portuguese (16th century) and Dutch (17th–18th century) control before becoming part of the British colonial administration in 1815 — traces of that past survive in the Bentota Rest House and nearby Dutch-period buildings.
In the 1960s and 70s, Sri Lanka's national planners chose Bentota as a flagship "integrated tourism resort," commissioning architect Geoffrey Bawa to design hotels that blended local materials with modern form. That project shaped the low-rise, garden-embedded resort style still visible along the coastline today.
A narrow spit between river and ocean
Bentota sits in Galle District, Southern Province, roughly 65 km south of Colombo along the A2 coastal highway. The town occupies a slender strip of land where the Bentota River — one of Sri Lanka's longer rivers, rising in the central hills — meets the Indian Ocean.

How to reach Bentota
Bentota is one of the more accessible south-coast towns, with rail, road and airport transfer options.

About 2–2.5 hours by private taxi or pre-arranged transfer via the Southern Expressway.
- 🚆By train from Colombo Fort
Coastal line trains to Bentota take roughly 2 hours, with scenic views along the shoreline for much of the route.
- 🚌By bus
Regular public and semi-luxury buses run from Colombo's Bastian Mall / Pettah bus stands to Bentota and onward to Galle.
- 🚗By car
Around 1 hour 15 minutes via the E01 Southern Expressway from Colombo, exiting at Welipenna or Aluthgama.
Weather & best time to visit
Bentota has a warm, humid tropical climate year-round. The most reliable beach weather is from November to April, before the south-west monsoon brings heavier rain and rougher seas.
